Winter Carp Fishing – Not this time!
Here we have it, the first frosts of winter are settling in. The proper fisherman are out on the bank perhaps more so than in the warmer months but low and behold Chappers is sitting golden in his jumper and scarf at work, only meters from Wellingborough Lakes.
I can here the chants now…Pu$$y! But this is the first year I am not gracing the banks like a pro. Those crisp frosty mornings are days made for carper’s, noone else on the lake and seven tonnes of tea bags hanging out back but this year I am going to have to leave it to you guys.
So if your fishing a lot this winter and would like to tell Fishable‘s readers about your winter carp fishing antics drop me an email to dc@fishable.co.uk
Winter Carp Fishing
Winter carp fishing may seem like a crazy prospect to many, just like all those other winter outdoor pursuits are, you know the ones, winter mechanics, winter cashew picking, winter dogging, all of them ones that involve you freezing ya nuts off. But really a drop in the temperature and a bit of frost shouldn’t be enough to put you off catching carp,if you can sit through driving rain, like many carp fishermen can, a spot of cold weather should be nothing. Winter carp fishing isn’t as crazy as it seems, winter is actually the time of the year when some of the biggest carp in the lake are at their most vulnerable, so winter carping makes for some good captures.
To catch carp in winter you just need some good planning and preparation, both for yourself and your gear. To prepare yourself for winter carping, we suggest you wear a “barcadigan”, now you may not be familiar with one of these and it ain’t something your
nan buys you from Marks, to get one on, all you need to do is get one bottle of Barcardi, open, down and take your shirt off. Ok, ok, you should put your shirt back on, you won’t catch many carp in winter or summer with that terrible torso revealed. Instead we suggest some decent warm clothing, layers are always best, so each item of clothing can be taken off as and when. You don’t want to be wearing all your layers when lugging your gear around though, you will only sweat buckets and damp layers don’t feel comfortable.
Believe us though the most important layer to be wearing is your thermal undercrackers, going commando when winter carp fishing ain’t brave, its just plain stupid. Next up on your winter carping gear checklist should be a bivy with a winter skin. The ground sheets on the bivys are pretty thick and sturdy but if you want to increase the heat you can always add a few camping mats and top them off with a thick old blanket.
Wrap up warm
To compliment the bivy and create a winter fishing wonderland, you will need a sleeping bag and a decent one, not one hastily picked up from some supermarket. The ratings on them supermarket jobs don’t mean anything, someone needs to apply some compliance
to sleeping bags. You really do pay for what you get, so go cheap and you will freeze them nuts off, get a nice goose down job and go get some roasted nuts.
Winter Carp Fishing Adventures
So we said before that winter carping gets them carp at their most vulnerable, ooh that sounds so wrong, it ain’t a crime if you shout surprise, right? Actually don’t shout surprise, you will scare the fish. Why it is easier to catch carp in winter comes down to the fact that the fish have different activity levels as there will be less angling pressure as only the brave undertake winter carp fishing. Also it becomes more easier to catch carp in winter because less bait is being fed into the water so the fish are learning the hard way there is
no such thing as a free lunch.
So if like us you are ready to go catch them carp in winter when they are cold, lonely and hungry, get yourself prepared for some winter carping and crack them under thermals on!
