Still don’t feel like taking the risk?
For those that remain unsure about preparing their own particles then do not fear! There are many companies like Bait-tech and Dynamite baits that offer most of these particles prepared so you don’t have too! Just purchase a tub or tin and you’re away without having to worry!
All of these baits catch carp and have produced some of the best!
The draw backs…
There are a few drawbacks to particles; with the possible exception of Tiger nuts are selective. The more particles that go into the water, the more other species get attracted to them. Other species have turned onto one or two particles baits before they even go for any new baits right from the start. This means that you could be hassled by Bream, Tench and all the rest! However it is usually the carp that are first onto them!
So what works best?
Maples peas, chic-peas, black-eyed beans and peanuts are properly the most successful and used most often out of the particle baits above. There are a few waters where they will not succeed immediately!
Tiger nuts are exceptional carp catching baits. The nuts are very selective because of their hardness and because of this other species like Bream find it hard to digest so they tend to stay clear of them. However this doesn’t mean that you not going to get the odd one or two! This is because tiger nuts and very hard to break down which means that they will stay on the lake bed or hook until a carp comes along. On most waters the tiger nut is not as instant as other particles like Maples, Chic’s and black-eyed peas, but one the fish are on them you can be sure to have some great carp. They have received bad press over the years due to heavy feeding; Anglers say that when the carp have been feeding
on tiger’s the lake goes dead for weeks on end and is impossible to catch on any bait!
Smaller dark seeds like hemp can be very effective when fished with other particle hook baits (Sweet corn). At times hemp will provide a great feeding response when carp are willing to pick up other baits over hemp. Tares and Dari seeds are both likely to give a similar response to hemp. I little tip is to allow them to germinate before you cook them, to do this leave them out in the sunlight and cover them over with water for a full day!
Less widely used particles but still effective are broad beans, sweet lupins, almonds and hazel nuts. Personally i feel that all nuts can be hit and miss. One minute they can be great and other times they there not as great. Another tip is when you buy these and they have been in stock for a long time there is a chance that they could float so try to buy them fresh where possible. Sweet lupins aren’t a big hit in the UK but have been a great success within Europe (France, Germany).
The most used particle has to be the good old fashioned sweet corn! You can buy these from the supermarket or even from the local tackle shop where there are a range of flavours like strawberry. However you can buy other great particles from your local supermarket like baked beans, kidney beans to name a few.
Other Preparation
The majority of these particles will work without cooking them; some can be lethal to the Carp if they are not cooked though. The preparation takes into consideration the Care but also enhances the bait by realising the full flavour when you boil it!
Even if you don’t cook the particles it is essential that you soak them. Another reason for boiling the Particle is because it eradicates and dangerous germs and organisms that could be lurking on them! (It’s similar to washing your carrots or cabbages before you eat it!!)
Some particles take the water onboard when they are being soaked this then causes them to expand and bloat. If the Particles were not soaked before use then this could happen when the carp is digesting it and could lead to its death.
It is recommended that you do boil them for the safety of the fish.
Application
As with boilie’s its essential that you pick the right particle for the job. On a hard bottom almost any particle can be used. When fishing over the likes of silt either use a very buoyant one or one with flat sides such as broad beans, Lima (Butter) beans, Kidney beans or Almonds.
Boilie’s and Particles are practically the same. They use the same methods and rigs for both. Particles, just like boilie’s are effective as hook bait when popped off the bottom. To achieve this you can use either Cork or a piece of rig foam!
Apart from lack of selectivity, properly the only drawback is the lack of distance that the bait can be launched with the catapult.
So what you could do if you are trying to get particles out is use some of the common methods such as spodding, PVA bags or even stringers! A little tip if you are going to use them in PVA or Stringers is that because the particles take on water from the soaking process they will start to break down the PVA. There are a few ways that you could avoid this. You can either soak the particle in salty water or allow some time for them to dry out.
Conclusion
Overall particles are tremendous baits and can be fished in most circumstances when care has been taken! As long as you remember the preparation process i can guarantee that you will have some success in the future with them!
Remember Carp safety is first!
