Hookbaits – Choose the Right One
Hook baits
Having so many hook baits out on the market makes it hard for all anglers to choose a suitable one, choosing the right one can be crucial and land that dream carp on the bank. That chosen hook bait will turn pickups into full blooded runs by selecting the correct hook bait for the situation!
Colour
Colour has to be one of the main key factors in choosing the right hook bait. Anglers need to understand how colour can be a great success in Fishing. If you watch ‘Korda’s-Underwater Carp fishing’ you will know just what I mean, you will notice the reaction that the carp have when a different colour is presented in the water. Korda’s underwater footage really does show the reactions to different hook baits, by changing colours, size, shapes and much more. A must watch DVD for any carp angler. The colours that work well in most situations from personal experience are – Yellow, Orange, White and Red. These all work great.
Flavours
Just like the colour of the hook bait smell also plays an important factor. Smell can help bring on the action in the swim as the fish become attracted to the smell. Try to use hook bait that has a stronger smell that the boilies that you are fishing as freebies, this way the carp will home in on the smell and it will have much more of a chance getting picked up rather than the freebies.
If you think that your hook baits need topping up just douse them in a pot with your chosen flavour for a few days before you go or on the bank and keep doing this until the smell has regained and made them much stronger! Don’t over fill the pot with Flavouring as you don’t want them to go soggy, they just need a slithering on their coat.
If things aren’t going to plan then have a play around on one of the rods, keep changing the hook bait until you get a pick up or some action. Then after landing one or two on one of the hook baits I would move all of my rods over to the hook bait that was producing/more action on the other rod.
Some Artificial hook baits can be great also when soaked in a flavour, like sweet corn just soak it in the desired flavouring and away you go, have a play around with different hook baits and flavourings, you will eventually find something that does the trick!
Some great flavourings from many different company’s my personal company is Mainline, There smells are just immense and there not full of loads of rubbish. You can buy some of their hook baits already double the strength like the pineapple dumbbells; this brings all factors into the hook bait in one! Shape – Dumbbell, Flavour – Boosted pineapple, Colour – Bright Yellow. So if you don’t want to do it yourself then just grab a pot of these!
Hookbait Shape
In my eyes shape plays an important role in my chosen hook bait it’s not a common factor that many anglers take into consideration but it sure does make a difference. Carp as used to round boilies they are fed them every day in the same old round shape, they become wise and will reject your chosen hook bait sometimes if it’s just round again you will see this on Korda’s Underwater Carp Fishing and see how the Carp actually spook from a round boilie, because they know that there is danger or some sort there.
This is why I can’t express enough how important it is to use different shapes like dumbbells and chops. I would say that when you are visiting pressured waters try to use different shapes; these little changes will make big changes to your fishing in most cases and increase your chance of success!
